Notes for Edwin SPENCER
Born - 12 December 1847 in Kelbrook to Agnes Spencer, single woman, Father unknown.
Agnes father John, agrees to adopt / foster Edwin from one month after birth to 13 years for 2 shillings.
( 10p ). Edwin is Baptised at St Johns church Ingrow, on 25th December 1852, Christmas day.
Agnes is acknowledged. Edwin is shown as Johns grandson on 1851 & 1861 census, but named as son on 1871 census.
First married to Eliza, date unknown ( but probably 1869 ), and is living at Paper Mill Bridge, Ingrow.
Edwin and Eliza have a daughter ( Jane Elizabeth ) in December 1869 ? or January 1870. However, Eliza must die in childbirth or shortly afterwards as there are entries in St. Johns Parish Register on 4th January 1870 for both the burial of Eliza and the Baptism of Jane Elizabeth.
On 2nd April 1871(census) Edwin is living in Hainworth Lane with his grandfather at the home of his Aunt Anne and her husband Jacob Hodgeson. No mention is made of his daughter Jane Elizabeth, who will be 14 months old. Edwin is referred to as a widower.
Edwin must move back to Paper Mill Bridge shortly after the census was taken as he re-marries on 9th September 1871 to Elizabeth Gledstone. His address is Paper mill Bridge and he is a widower.
Little is known and he dies at Oakworth Road, 14th May 1919 age 71 years, and buried at St Johns Ingrow.
