| From Chambers Biographical Dictionary:- His zeal as a Wesleyan preacher for large open air gatherings carried once from 6am until 8pm received no approbation from the leaders of the denomination and in 1808 he was cut off from the Wesleyan connection. But he quickly gathered round him many devoted followers and in 1810 a committee of 10 members formed at STANDLEY Nr BEMERSLEY. The title of Primitive Methodists was adopted in 1812, colloquially also known as the 'Ranters'. Bourne and his brother founded the first body of the chapel at TUNSTALL in 1811. For the greater part of his life he worked as a carpenter and builder but found time to visit Scotland, Ireland and the USA. Among his writings is a "History of the Primitive Methodists" (1823). The following is copied from the Methodist Hymn Book published in Dec. 1933:- In the first years of Primitive Methodism a small book was used whose hymns struck a characteristically evangelistic note. In 1825 Hugh Bourne drew up a new hymn book to which the earlier collection was added, and this "Large Hymn-Book" served the Primitive Methodist Church for almost thirty years. He is also mentioned in the preface to the Methodist Hymn Book. Brought out a new hymn book in 1825. See also the Blue/ White plate with his picture on. Is he a relation of Joseph Bourne?
